Red Sox's Garrett Cooper: Heads to bench in O'Neill's return

    27m ago

Cooper is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Cooper served as Boston's designated hitter in both of the past two games and went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts. He'll cede DH duties to Rob Refsnyder on Wednesday, and with Tyler O'Neill (knee) returning from the 10-day injured list one day after Wilyer Abreu (ankle) was deactivated, Boston will likely have room in the lineup against right-handed pitching for only one of Refsnyder and Cooper moving forward. Refsnyder has performed far better than Cooper so far this season, so it wouldn't be surprising if Boston opted to make the former a greater priority in the lineup.

  • Pete Alonso NYM 1B

Alonso went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 6-3 win over the Nationals.

The first baseman took Washington closer Kyle Finnegan deep to left field in the ninth inning to give the Mets an insurance run. Alonso's racked up seven hits, including three doubles and two homers, over the last six games, and since May 7 he's slashing .279/.330/.548 in 26 contests with six of his 14 long balls and 15 of his 31 RBI on the season.

Marlins' Josh Bell: Extends hit streak vs. Rays

    2h ago

Bell went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and an RBI in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to Tampa Bay.

Bell extended Miami's lead to 3-0 in the first inning with a two-run triple, his first three-bagger since 2022, before leading off the eighth with a double. With Tuesday's multi-hit performance, Bell's now hit safely in seven straight games, going 12-for-29 (.414.) with a 1.075 OPS in that span. After a brutal start to the year, the 31-year-old first baseman has boosted his slash line to .247/.318/.385 with six homers, 29 RBI and 26 runs scored across 61 games.

Mariners' Ty France: Laces timely double Tuesday

    2h ago

France went 1-for-3 with a two-run double, a walk and a run in a win over the Athletics on Tuesday.

The veteran infielder squared up for a third-inning two-bagger that brought home J.P. Crawford and Josh Rojas with the first two runs of the night, France's eighth and ninth RBI over the last nine games. France has shown a bit more pop in his bat than usual during that span, posting four extra-base hits overall (two doubles, two home runs) on his way to a .333 average and 1.044 OPS across 36 plate appearances. The sample has also featured a welcome increase and drop in walk and strikeout rates, respectively, as he's drawn free passes at a 13.9 percent clip and struck out in a modest 16.7 percent of his plate appearances.

  • Triston Casas BOS 1B

Red Sox's Triston Casas: Still not swinging bat

    4h ago

Casas (ribs) still experiences pain when rotating and has not yet begun swinging a bat, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports.

Casas has been taking grounders and hitting the weight room, but that he's not yet swinging a bat suggests he may not return June 21, the earliest he can be activated off the 60-day injured list. "Whenever he feels better about it and he doesn't feel pain, then [swinging] is the next step," manager Alex Cora said. "It's not about treatment or whatever. It just kind of had to heal on its own." While Casas has been sidelined, the Red Sox are getting by with Dominic Smith and Garrett Cooper at first base.

  • Nate Lowe TEX 1B

Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Returns against righty

    4h ago

Lowe started at first base and went 1-for-2 with a walk in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Tigers.

Lowe returned to the starting lineup against a right-hander following three consecutive games on the bench against a lefty. He was eventually removed for pinch hitter Robbie Grossman in the ninth inning against a left-hander. Lowe's line against southpaws in 2024 is down from his career standard -- .619 OPS this season compared to .761 for his career -- but that's still better than the alternative. Ezequiel Duran, who started at first base while Lowe was benched, owns a .604 OPS against lefties in 2024.
